Wild Mustangs
A herd of wild horses run in the Flint Hills of northeastern Butler County, Kansas. More than 7,000 such horses have been placed in five Flint Hills pastures, totaling some 60,000 acres, by the federal Bureau of Land Management. The bureau takes bids from ranchers on a per-head basis to place the horses. The contracting ranchers provide the tallgrass pasture and, in the winter, supplemental feed.
