Color, in Layers
Layers of sediment, laid down some 80 million years ago, are evident in the horizontal lines that mark the chalk towers of Little Jerusalem in western Kansas. The lines of the towers are echoed in the sparse short-grass prairie on the valley floor. The chalk outcroppings, shaped by erosion, date back some 80 million years when this area was covered by a giant inland sea. The unusual landscape, now part of the Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park, is south of Oakley.
